Summary: Advertising poster from 1897 for the C. Kern Brewing Company, Port Huron, Michigan. The advertisement promotes the brewery's "Bismarck Table Beer." The poster features a stately gentleman sampling a bottle of Kern's beer. A dog looks on, hoping to get a sample of his own. In very small lettering at lower right appear the words, "H. Schile & Sons, Lithographers & Publishers, 269 Bowery, N.Y."

Notes: This brewery in Port Huron was founded in 1856 and passed through several different owners until 1877 when beer-maker Christian Kern took over. The Kern brewery produced beer until 1919, when prohibition forced its closure. The brewery re-opened after prohibition. From 1945 to 1950, the brewery was operated under the name "Friars Ale Brewing Company."
