About this image...

Image Title: The Flag Of Our Union, 1861

Creator: Currier & Ives.,

Date: 1861.

Summary: A dramatic Unionist print in much the same mold as "The Union Volunteer" (no. 1861-14). Here a young, mustachioed Union soldier is shown in three-quarter length, facing left while holding an American flag over his right shoulder and raising a saber above his head. This and similar prints were evidently designed to ride the initial crest of militant patriotism in the North after the outbreak of the Civil War.

Notes: The Library's impression of "The Flag of Our Union" was deposited for copyright by Currier & Ives on June 13, 1861, and bears a later, November 15, State Department stamp.

Subjects: Army (U.S.)
